Frequently Asked Questions

  • What's the Difference Between Laminate and LVT?

Laminate flooring is a hard material consisting of MDF (medium density fiberboard) and a scratch resistant coating but has no water resistant features.  Luxury vinyl plank or tile is going to be waterproof flooring completely on the surface and under the surface meaning if your house has a flood you could take this floor up, dry it and reinstall! All of our luxury vinyl is embossed and registered to look and feel like real wood,  and with a 20 mil wear layer or above so you will have plenty of surface protection from anything life throws your way. Luxury vinyl has many different styles from a groutable tile look or click together tile, to a lovely long plank wood look, the possibilities are endless! Wood Composite flooring has come a long way in the past few years, it will typically be a lot harder to scratch and can have up to 100 hours water resistance, though it is not waterproof. Our wood composite flooring is made from a wood composite that is tightly pressed to form the top layer with a scratch resistant coating. It is also thicker than luxury vinyl making it easier to transition from tile or wood to new Surge Composite flooring.

  • What Are the Main Types of Hardwood Floors?

There are two types of hardwood flooring: Solid and Engineered. Solid flooring can only be installed over a subfloor so if you have a concrete slab you can not install a solid floor. Solid hardwood is made from a single piece of timber, it has a thick wear layer and can be refinished several times. Engineered flooring is made of multiple layers sliced and formed into one piece of flooring, and can be installed over concrete floors. Both solid and engineered floorings are beautiful and add value to your home.

  • Can I use a Steam Cleaner on Hardwood Floors?

Absolutely not! Hardwood flooring and moisture do not get along! Use a woodpecker cleaner or a bona cleaner and mop for the cleaner you are using. Easy maintenance and a beautiful floor for a very long time with proper care will make your floors last for years to come.

  • Is Ceramic Tile or Porcelain Tile Better?

Ceramic tile is usually more affordable but porcelain tile is usually a lot more durable.  Both options are great and can last a long time.  Be aware that some stores will sell you “seconds” which have less than perfect quality, cosmetic faults, or scratches. We only source the best tile and handle all your installation so your project is done right and looks great.

  • Can I Install New Flooring Over Something Older?

The best answer here is, sometimes!

However, it will vary depending on your individual area. There are several things to contemplate before you start. Depending on the age and condition of the old flooring, as well as the stability of the older flooring. If the base layer is in good shape and offers enough support and consistency, it may just make sense to lay new flooring over it. We can always take a look and let you the best way to get your project finished.

  • Why Should I Buy Luxury Vinyl at Wilsons Instead of a Box Store?

Well in one word, quality. When you buy from a box store, your flooring may be a closeout due to color variation, a bad run that may not install well, or a 2nd or 3rd grade flooring. Oftentimes, when you have issues it is hard to get the situation fixed in a timely manner, if you can at all. Wilson’s Custom Flooring is here to make your project easier and done right. With our labor and materials warranty, you can rest easy knowing you won’t have those issues to deal with.

  • How Do I Prevent Scratches From My Furniture On My Flooring?

The best protection for your flooring is to place felt pads on the legs of furniture all wood can scratch although some are more scratch resistant than others all wood can be scratched protectors prevent this from being an issue.
